FAQ
Questions? Just ask.
Straight answers about how it works, prices, your landlord and your data.
Getting started
Is it free to try?
Yes. Your first room is checked free and you don’t need a card. You only pay when you want the full check for your stage.
I’ve already moved out. Is it too late?
No. You can start at any stage: when the check-out report arrives, when deductions are claimed, or once a dispute has started. Start as soon as you can, because the schemes’ deadlines still apply.
Do I need an app?
No. MyDepositBack is a website, so there’s nothing to install. It works in the browser on your phone or computer, and you can add it to your Home Screen if you’d like it to open full screen.
Which deposit schemes do you cover?
The three government-approved schemes in England and Wales: the Deposit Protection Service (DPS), the Tenancy Deposit Scheme (TDS) and mydeposits.
Your landlord and agent
Will you contact my landlord or letting agent?
Never. We prepare every message, you approve it, and it goes from your own email. Your landlord only ever deals with you.
How do I send the messages you draft?
When you approve a message, we email it to you, and you send it from your own email address. Forward any reply to your deposit inbox and we’ll read it for you.
What if my landlord doesn’t reply?
After 14 days without a reply, we show you the next step for your deposit scheme. That’s usually asking the scheme to repay you, and we guide you through it.
Prices and payment
How much does it cost?
Moving in: first room free, then £9 for all your rooms. Moving out: £29 before the inspection, or £39 once you have the check-out report or a claim.
What does money back mean?
If you buy the check-out pack for £39 once you have a deduction claim, and your landlord still keeps everything they claimed when you bought it, we refund the £39. It doesn’t apply to a pack you bought before the claim.
How do I pay?
By card, Apple Pay or Google Pay, once, for the stage you’re at. There’s no subscription. Stripe takes the payment, and we never see your card details.
Your documents and data
What do you do with my documents and photos?
They stay yours. AI reads them to find the facts and draft your comments and replies. It runs through outside model providers, which may keep them for a time and may use them for training. We never sell your data, and our privacy notice has the details.
How long do you keep my deposit file?
We delete your deposit file, photos and AI results 12 months after your deposit is paid out. Payment records are kept for 6 years, as tax law requires.
Can I delete everything?
Yes. You can delete your deposit file, photos and AI results at any time in Settings. We don’t offer an export before deletion, so keep copies of anything you need.
Legal
Is this legal advice?
No. We’re not a law firm. We check your evidence against the schemes’ published guidance and prepare everything for you to decide on and send. If you’re likely to be owed compensation, for example because your deposit wasn’t protected, we refer you to a solicitor.
What if I need a solicitor?
If your deposit wasn’t protected on time, you may be owed compensation, and we can refer you to a solicitor at no cost to you. Shelter and Citizens Advice also give free, independent advice.
